Carroll Gardens Engagement - Brooklyn NYC - Sarah and Jeff

Carroll Gardens Engagement Photo Shoot Session Brooklyn NYC Wedding Photographer-12.jpg

This engagement shoot was 8 years in the making…. even though Sarah and Jeff didn’t even know each other 8 years ago.

Sarah and I met in 2010 when we were hired to be flown to Salt Lake City to sing in a concert. The day before we left for the 5-day gig, I bought myself my very first professional quality camera. Needless to say, I took hundreds of pictures on the trip, and Sarah was one of my very first muses.

A few months later, when Sarah was looking for new headshots, she was one of my very first clients.

And when she and Jeff got engaged, I’m flattered that one of her first thoughts in planning the wedding was “David Perlman.”

It was so much fun to once again photograph Sarah during the engagement session! But what I loved most about this shoot was getting to know Jeff and getting to see how well he treats my friend. We all want our friends to end up with someone that we feel is deserving of them, and in this case it warms my heart to see that Sarah and Jeff share an easy-going zest for life and that they treat each other with love, admiration, and respect.

Sarah and Jeff, I’m beyond excited to be on this journey with the two of you. You are so much fun to be around, and I couldn’t be happier that you’re marrying each other and that I get to be along for the ride! Enjoy this sneak peek from your engagement shoot!

Theatrical Flushing Town Hall Wedding - Queens, NYC - Kellie and Marshall

“I’ve had enough of this mockery!”

It was the first time I had ever been to a wedding where somebody openly and loudly objected to what was taking place. There was a rush of adrenaline and shock when Brandon voiced his concern about Kellie and Marshall becoming husband and wife.

OK, it’s not as bad as what you’re thinking. Brandon’s interruption of Kellie and Marshall’s first dance was part of an elaborate show that was written and directed by the groom himself. Marshall is an award-winning director, writer, and composer, so it’s only fitting that their first dance had dialogue, plot twists, fight sequences, and of course some choreography as well. Not coincidentally, Kellie is a beautifully trained actor, singer, and dancer. The first dance was only one of the many theatrical highlights of the evening.

While the first dance was certainly electric, the most moving moment of the day was actually not for public consumption. Kellie and Marshall chose to read their vows to each other off microphone while some powerful music filled the ceremony space. Nobody could hear what Kellie and Marshall were saying to each other, but we could all see their emotion, and it was a beautifully intimate moment that moved many (myself included) to tears.

Kellie and Marshall, your wedding was so inventive, beautiful, and authentic to who you are. You both contribute so much to this world just by using your voices to create. And beyond all the artistic genius, you two are kind, generous, gracious humans. That’s the part that is most moving and makes me so happy about your wedding. I’m honored that you trusted me to capture your wedding day, and I couldn’t be happier for you two!!! Congratulations!!

Williamsburg and Rough Trade Engagement Session - Brooklyn NYC - Jenn and Scott

Dave Gahan, lead singer of Depeche Mode, if your ears are ringing it’s because your two biggest fans are getting married.

Jenn and Scott met partially because of their mutual love of Depeche Mode, so it was only fitting that these two self-described music junkies had their engagement shoot in Rough Trade NYC, Williamsburg’s music and vinyl mecca. Before going into the store, we had a little jaunt in a nearby park.

Jenn and Scott, your love for life is infectious. I loved being around your energy: joyful, excited, and super fun. I cannot wait for the wedding in May!!!!! (Dave, you better be there.)

Sag Harbor Wedding - Celina and Greg

I steadied myself on the slack line, bent down, and tried to take a step forward as I gently let go of the tree that I was holding onto. Immediately I lost balance and landed on the ground one foot below me. Slacklining is hard.

What does this have to do with a wedding? For Celina and Greg, everything. They wanted their wedding to be a chill, fun day of games and great food with their closest friends and family. I love that Celina and Greg decided to rent a house in Sag Harbor for the week so that their families could vacation together before having a wedding in the backyard… which was right on the water! On the wedding day, Celina’s father officiated an intimate ceremony before the families were joined by some of the couple’s closest friends for a beautiful day of slacklining, giant Jenga, cornhole, and other games that I’ve never heard of.

Celina and Greg, you successfully created a chill and playful beachside backyard celebration with incredible food. And more than that, you created a marriage that is so clearly meant to be. The two of you are so kind, so generous of spirit, so giving and loving to those around you. I’m inspired by the way you work together as a team and by the way you look at each other with unfiltered and unconditional love. I’m honored that you trusted me to capture your wedding day, and I couldn’t be happier for you two. Congratulations!
